The Google Knowledge Graph Diaries

Stephanie Hawn June 29, 2012

With all the recent changes going on over at Google search, I thought about how interesting it would be if Google had a diary – somewhere to pine away and divulge its innermost thoughts, feelings, worries and loves.  Here’s what a few selections might have looked like:

June 8, 2009

Dear Diary,

Today was not a good day. Here I was, sitting on the top of the Search Engine empire, matching keywords with site content and helping people find stuff. And, along comes MSN and launches this “decision engine” called BING, totally cramping my style. To make matters WORSE, I turn on the TV and what do I see? An ad for BING basically broadcasting my BIGGEST flaw to the entire world. Look for yourself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAwUUgnBhCU. I mean, I’m the biggest proponent of RELEVANCY – it drives everything I do. But, geeze, I’m in the business of  matching content, not READING MINDS. Off to take a bubble bath and brainstorm…

Xoxo,

Google

Hey Diary,

Sorry it’s been awhile! A LOT has been going on, especially since that JERK Bing got me all fired up about finding a way to read people’s minds. I haven’t figured that out yet…But, I think I do know the answer: The web isn’t merely words—it’s information about things in the real world, and understanding the relationships between real-world entities can help me deliver relevant information more quickly. Oh, I made this friend, Metaweb, who totally agrees with me! We are working together to make my search more intuitive and relevant. It’s going to take awhile, but I’m really excited.

Talk  soon!

Dear Diary,

Man, I have been busy! I’m still studying semantics with Metaweb so I can better understand the meaning of what people are searching for, while ALSO working on this awesome way for me to connect people socially, which is launching today. Not only will help people to interact on the web more like they do when they are not online, but it gives me more information about people. I wish I was allowed to combine that info with my new semantic savvy…hmmm…

Gotta Run!

Hi Diary,

Was shopping for Halloween costumes today…I’m thinking Genghis Khan or Leonardo Da Vinci. Can’t decide because I’ve been really distracted by this new girl named Siri. Apparently, not only does she help people find information on the web, like me, but she can TALK. She’s really smart. I’m not too worried, but it definitely means I need to work faster if I want to compete!

Talk soon,

G.

Dear Diary,

Everything is coming together! In a few days, I’ll be able to take all the information I’m learning about people and combine it with all this research I’ve been doing. I also got a pet penguin and trained him to eat spam. It’s made me a little better at giving people what they are searching for, but it’s nothing compared to what I have planned next…

Xoxo,

Diary –

No time to talk. Facebook went public today. Finally ready to bring out the “big guns!”

Diary,

It’s been a long journey, but, it’s finally here! Now that my Knowledge Graph is ready, I finally get to show everyone how much smarter I have gotten over the last few years. For example, earlier today, someone searched for “Pink” and I was able to figure out whether they wanted information on the color or the pop star — Go me! I’m also able to save people time by simply answering their questions myself.

I think some websites are worried about this change, but I wish they wouldn’t be. Now, they don’t have to worry about keywords as much as the quality of their content and user experience, which are more important for the success of a site or business than “keywords”, anyway.

I wonder what BING, Siri, and Facebook think? I’m getting smarter the more people use me, so, maybe soon I’ll know. Ha!

Yours Truly,

Google
