Using FTP
FTP software is used when you need to connect directly to the server where your site is hosted. You may need to do this in order to make edits to your website content, or add new images.
There are two ways to FTP to your website. One way is to FTP through a web browser, and the other is to FTP using specific FTP software.
FTP through a web browser:
- To FTP through most web browsers, simply open the browser and type in the following address: ftp://ftp.yourdomain.com
- When you have connected to your ftp site a dialog box will open and you will be prompted to enter your user name and password. You will have the option to Save Password if you do not want to be prompted each time you access the site.
- Once successfully logged in, your window will resemble a typical Windows Explorer layout with a series of folders and/or files. If you host with Enilon, your primary site files are located within the \httpdocs folder.
Using FTP software:
If you have trouble with the web browser method above or if you simply prefer a more robust FTP solution, you'll need to download an FTP program such as CuteFTP, AceFTP or WS_FTP. These and other programs are widely available online for a minimal fee. You can also perform a Google search for "ftp software" to see the many programs that are available.
After you have downloaded and installed your FTP software you'll need to set it up. As there are many ftp programs available, there may be differences in how they will be configured. However, certain basic pieces of information are required no matter what program you choose.
- Enter the name of your website
- Enter the IP address of your website or your website domain. In some cases your ftp program may require that you format this information so that it begins with an ftp:// reference before the IP address or website domain.
- Enter your username and password as provided by your web host.
- You may be asked which default local folder you would like to use, or what default remote folder you would like to use. You can skip this step if you'd like, but note the following:
- default local folder: this is the folder on your computer or network where you have your website files stored.
- default remote folder: If you host with Enilon, your primary site files are located within the \httpdocs folder.
- After you have entered all of the requested information you will connect to your ftp site.
